A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Thursday, January 2, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The quake, which hit near the port city of Antofagasta, originated at a depth of 104 kilometers beneath the surface.
Chile, one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, has a history of significant seismic events. In 1960, the southern city of Valdivia experienced a record-breaking 9.5 magnitude earthquake, the strongest ever recorded, which claimed nearly 6,000 lives.
