ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism about the economic benefits of the newly operational Gwadar International Airport, emphasizing its potential to benefit Balochistan and the entire country.

“Gwadar Airport, if managed commercially, can bring immense advantages to Pakistan’s economy,” the PM remarked during a federal cabinet meeting.

The airport, a key China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, became operational with the landing of its first PIA flight from Karachi, carrying 46 passengers. Spread over 4,300 acres, it is Pakistan’s largest airport and features a runway accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. The $230 million facility, funded by China, is located 26 kilometers from Gwadar city.

The PM praised the airport as a “milestone for Pakistan’s development” and highlighted the importance of valuing this “Chinese gift” amid challenges posed by adversaries.

During the meeting, he also discussed Pakistan’s economic progress, including a record $348 million in IT exports in December 2024, and urged further efforts to boost the economy.

Shehbaz lauded security forces for their sacrifices in ensuring the nation’s prosperity and expressed hope for a smooth and comfortable upcoming Hajj for pilgrims, as preparations were underway to enhance their experience.
