Dhaka: Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa) has announced that the platform advocating safe roads would no longer publish accident reports following the confusion created over the difference in recent statistics on fatalities and crashes by other organisations.
Nischa Chairman Ilias Kanchan came up with the announcement at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday.
According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), 5,024 people died in 5,495 road accidents across the country in 2023, while police said in its report that 4,475 people were killed in 5,093 accidents in the same year, Kanchan said.
“The figures provided by other organisations are also much more, while the information we have also does not match these reports… as a result, the nation is being misled.”
He said that even after a long time, the BRTA has officially published the accident report, but that is not enough.
“The government should form a strong Road Crash Data Monitoring Cell in coordination with health, home affairs, and road transport and bridges ministries. Alongside, the cooperation of private organisations like us can be taken,” he added.
